Major Sports Events Manager, Greater London Authority

Salary: £49,405 per annum
Contract type: Permanent and Fixed term or secondment opportunity to 31 August 2022.

London has created a lasting legacy from London 2012 by delivering a huge portfolio of major sports events since the Games. Events have included the 2015 Rugby World Cup, 2015 European Hockey Championships, 2016 European Swimming Championships, 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships and IPC World Athletics Championships, and UEFA European Championship 2020 matches.

Major sports events play a huge part in boosting the city’s economy and reach. They engage local, national, and international audiences, encourage investment, and spend, and are an important part of London’s recovery from COVID-19. The Mayor of London has made clear his ambition for London to be the undisputed sporting capital of the world by luring even more global sports events to the capital.

The GLA is the strategic lead for major sporting events in the city and the first point of contact for anyone looking to bring their event to London. The GLA’s Major Sports Events Team is responsible for managing the GLA’s stake in major sports events in London, helping to unlock support from a variety of city stakeholders to ensure that rights owners can deliver their events in London to world class standards. The team builds and manages relationships with events owners, national governing bodies of sport, international sports federations, venue owners and key government agencies.

The GLA is seeking to recruit two experienced events and relationship managers to manage the city’s involvement in the portfolio of international major sports events that take place in London, and to oversee the development and delivery of the GLA’s new major sports events strategy. The successful candidates will work closely with senior external stakeholders, as well as working closely with teams across the GLA to build, develop and deliver London’s portfolio of major sports events.

Candidates are required to demonstrate a track record of working on multi-stakeholder projects, as well as detailed knowledge and experience of planning, resourcing and delivering major sports events. A demonstrable understanding of the structure of London government and the organisation of international sport is also required.

This role will be based at City Hall, in the Royal Docks (Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE). At present GLA staff are working largely from home, with office space available. Over the coming weeks and months, we will be moving to hybrid working as part of this, you will need to split your time between home working and coming into the office.
